Contact Walter Thompson-Hernández

Walter is a former New York Times reporter and host. He has reported and hosted videos from nearly every continent and throughout the United States. He has also written for NPR, Fusion, BBC, The Guardian, among others.

Walter received his master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Stanford University, and was enrolled in the UCLA Chicano Studies Ph.D. program for one year before leaving to write for the Times.

He was recently honored with the 2019 Instagram and Hispanic Heritage Award Foundation for his representation of Latinos/Latinx communities in media throughout the United States. He is also the 2019 recipient of the Whiting Creative Non-Fiction Award for his upcoming book, The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America's Urban Heartland.

Before graduate school, Walter played professional basketball for the Mexican Olympic team throughout Latin America. When he isn't reporting, he’s hiking at Ascot Hills Park in El Sereno or eating deep dish pizza at Masa in Echo Park.
