Voters have picked Jackie Goldberg to fill an open seat representing District 5 on the L.A. Unified School Board. The day after her special election win she met with Superintendent Austin Beutner on an LAUSD campus.
Prior to a tour of dual-language classes at Micheltorena Elementary School in Silver Lake, Beutner and Goldberg met to discuss efforts to promote Measure EE, a parcel tax on the June 4 ballot that would generate operating funds for LAUSD. The ballot measure requires a two-thirds majority to pass and still faces a legal challenge.
The meeting also allowed Goldberg and the superintendent to stand in front of cameras together, which itself sends a message: Goldberg had sharply criticized the board's decision to hire Beutner last year. She now says she hopes to work with him.
