Assemblyman Marc Berman’s bill would have required California community colleges to open their parking lots next summer to homeless students. Now, he says amendments by the appropriations committee water the bill down too much. Critics said Berman's bill didn't address the long term problems faved by homeless students. Berman said a short term fix would go a long way to help these students. The issue is on lawmakers' radar. The current fiscal year budget sent $53 million to public colleges and universities to help students who are homeless or don’t have enough to pay rent or buy food.
