California lawmakers have sent a bill to the governor’s desk that could bring about big changes for many jobs throughout the state.

Assembly Bill 5 requires companies to turn many of their independent contract workers into employees. Gig workers such as Uber and Lyft drivers are covered by the bill, while doctors, hair stylists and real estate agents are among those exempted from the legislation.
